Italian Cultural Courses
In addition to language instruction, IDEA VERONA offers a variety of Italian cultural courses to choose from. These optional classes are held two afternoons a week. (A minimum of five students if required to run each course. One cultural course is included in the tuition fees.)
HISTORY OF ITALIAN LITERATURE
This course introduces the major Italian authors and genres. Students study, in a comprehensive fashion, the forms of expression and the fundamentals of literature produced since 1200. Authors such as Dante, Boccaccio, Petrarca, Ariosto, Tasso, and Machiavelli will be read and analyzed. General discussions are held to compare students’insights and opinions.
READING AND ANALYSIS OF ITALIAN CLASSICS
In this course, literature will be integrated into the study of Italian through the reading of texts in their original language, be it prose, poetry, or theater. Examples are taken from Dante, Leopardi, Manzoni, and Pirandello.
ART HISTORY
This course will acquaint students with the principal Italian artists in terms of the historical cultural periods during which they lived. The works of artists such as Giotto, Mantegna, Palladio, and Titian, who lived in Verona and the Veneto region, are most thoroughly analyzed.
ITALIAN GEOGRAPHY FOR TRAVELERS
This course presents a general view of the most interesting and artistic areas in northern Italy: Venice, with its Oriental ambiance, Padua, home to the most prestigious Italian University, or Mantua, with its combined atmosphere of the Medieval and Renaissance periods. Particular attention is given to Verona and its proximity, for instance Valpolicella and Lake Garda.
LYRIC OPERA
This is a general course on the history of Italian lyric opera. Students are introduced to the most prominent Italian composers of opera, as well as the authors of the “libretto” of several of the most enduring operas. There may also be the possibility to attend performances at the Teatro Filarmonico or the Arena of Verona according to the season.
COMMERCIAL ITALIAN
This course will cover the important aspects of Italian commercial language as used in money management, marketing, Italian fiscal systems, banking, and the Italian stock market. A variety of commercial terms and formats will also be presented, for business correspondence, notes, reports, memos and charts.
Additional courses on Italian cinema history and theater are also available upon request.
